TELEHANDLER
This course provides classroom instruction and hands-on training for operators of telehandlers (variable-reach rough terrain forklift trucks). It is designed to meet the operator training and evaluation requirements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l), as applied to construction work under 29 CFR 1926.602(d). Participants learn safe operating principles with emphasis on variable-reach stability, load-chart interpretation, frame leveling, attachment use, and rough terrain operation, followed by a practical skills demonstration and performance evaluation. Successful completion supports employer certification of the operator for the specific equipment type and workplace.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the controls, instrumentation, and operating characteristics of a telehandler
- Interpret the load capacity chart and determine safe load limits at varying boom angles and extensions
- Explain longitudinal stability and how boom extension, elevation, and load center affect it
- Properly level the frame and deploy stabilizers/outriggers where equipped
- Perform a pre-operation inspection and properly report defects
- Operate the telehandler safely, including traveling, maneuvering, boom operation, and load placement
EVALUATION AND CERTIFICATION
Each operator's performance is evaluated in the workplace. Per 1910.178(l)(6), the employer certifies that each operator has been trained and evaluated. The certification record includes the name of the operator, the date of the training, the date of the evaluation, and the identity of the person(s) performing the training or evaluation.
